When you are out in public and your little one has an outburst, you feel as though everyone is looking you through a microscope. Perhaps you are so embarrassed you give in your child’s will to avoid the dirty looks from those around you. Stop.

Your children may be angels at home but as soon as you get in public, they are going to get their way because they know exactly how to push your buttons.

When your child starts throwing a fit in public you also might be feeling anger and frustration but if he or she sees getting all worked up you are doomed. Remain calm; if you do not intend to get them what they want first try to redirect their attention by telling your toddler a story, asking him or her a question, or start singing their favorite song.

If it is a snack, tell your child they must ask for it in a regular voice (that is if you intend to give it to them) and they must wait until you are out of the store to eat it. On the other hand, if it is too soon before their next meal they will have to wait until after they eat.

If they do not agree to the terms then do not get the snack. Leave the item in the cart if you give it to them while in the store, they may want something else on the next isle and the whole cycle starts again.

Now you are giving them a choice and a consequence they can choose to ask in a calm voice like a big boy or girl or not get what they want. The second lesson is they can have what they want but they cannot have it right now, which teaches delayed gratification.

If they cannot have what ever it is they are asking for tell them no, it will not hurt them. If they ask you, “why can’t I have it?” Do not answer the standard “Because I said so” most kids will not say ok mom or dad you know best. You will just get more questions and crying and you will frustrate your child even more.

Instead, turn the tables around and ask your child a question “Why do you think I’m saying no?” See if they can come up with an answer, now they have to stop whining because they are thinking, give them a hint if they need one. Perhaps they will come up with they can’t have it because they are throwing a temper tantrum.

Most of the time diversions work but sadly sometimes you just have to let them cry once they realize that you are not giving in they stop behaving badly and you can try talking to them again. If you get embarrassed because there are other folks around just smile and say nice weather we are having today.

Kids have tantrums and outbursts happen. The sooner you deal with it the better, stand firm and eventually they grow out of having temper tantrums but it takes patience, courage, and understanding on your part.
